Over 1000 People Report Feeling 4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Near Taupō

More than 1000 people in the North Island have reported feeling a 4.6 magnitude earthquake near Taupō on Tuesday. The quake struck at 11:15 am NZST and was centered 15 kilometers north of Taupō at a depth of 18 kilometers.

According to GeoNet, the earthquake was felt throughout the North Island, with reports of shaking from as far away as Auckland and Wellington. No damage or injuries have been reported.

Strong Shallow Earthquake Hits South Island

A strong shallow earthquake has struck the South Island this morning. Initially reported as magnitude 5.8, it has now been revised to magnitude 5.0. The quake struck at 10:18 am NZST and was centered 25 kilometers west of Hanmer Springs at a depth of 15 kilometers.

GeoNet reports that the earthquake was felt throughout the South Island, with reports of shaking from as far away as Christchurch and Dunedin. No damage or injuries have been reported.

7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Remote Pacific Ocean

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A magnitude 7.1 quake struck in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean on July 18. The quake, which was initially reported as a magnitude 6.9, struck at 11:56 pm NZST and was centered 1,047 kilometers northeast of Raoul Island.

The quake was felt in New Zealand's Kermadec Islands, but there were no reports of any damage or injuries. GeoNet reports that the earthquake was a "shallow" event, meaning it occurred at a depth of less than 70 kilometers.

New Zealand is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of the earth's crust that is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country experiences an average of 20,000 earthquakes each year, most of which are too small to be felt.
